Milan, 31 Aug. (LaPresse) – The body of the 22-year-old hiker who went missing in the Fumante Group has been found. His family had had no news of him since Saturday, when he had set out to climb the Vajo Scuro Via Ferrata and spend a night in a mountain refuge. The alarm was raised late yesterday evening after his car was found still parked at Rifugio Battisti. The Recoaro-Valdagno, Schio and Arsiero Alpine Rescue teams, together with rescuers from the Guardia di Finanza, who were using their helicopter from Venice equipped with an IMSI Catcher device, began searching on the ground and from the air, assisted by firefighters and Carabinieri. In the early afternoon, a report came from a hiker who, while tackling the Vajo Scuro Via Ferrata yesterday, had come across some objects and taken them away, thinking they had been abandoned. Today, after hearing about the ongoing search, he called to report the find. The rescuers therefore focused their attention downstream from the first section of the Vajo Scuro Via Ferrata, and a team began descending along the vertical face, gradually finding several objects belonging to the young man, until the Alpine Rescue drone, deployed in support of the operations, unfortunately located the body of the 22-year-old from Saonara (Padua). The rescuers then reached the body and provided the coordinates to the Verona Emergency helicopter that was arriving, which recovered the body and transported it to the base camp at Rifugio Battisti. For reasons still being investigated, the young man is believed to have fallen shortly after beginning the climb of the Via Ferrata, plunging more than 200 metres.
