Oristano, 15 Sept. (LaPresse) – A patient in his seventies, who suffered from other medical conditions and had contracted the West Nile virus, has died at San Martino Hospital in Oristano. The man had been hospitalised for about a week. With this latest death, the number of West Nile fever victims recorded in 2026 in the province of Oristano has risen to four, whilst there are 27 confirmed cases of infection. The health authorities are once again urging people to take preventative measures, particularly to protect the elderly and those in the most vulnerable groups. “We would like to remind everyone once again of the measures to prevent and protect against the virus: avoid standing water, fit mosquito nets to windows, and use insect repellent sprays when outdoors, particularly at dusk, when mosquitoes – the insects that carry the virus – are most active,” said Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Department of Hygiene and Health Prevention. “Let us continue to protect ourselves and, in particular, the elderly and vulnerable,” urges Director Grazia Cattina. “Let us not stop scrupulously following the precautions to protect ourselves from mosquito bites.”
