This is written by the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, in a commentary on the recent Vatican document ‘A Path of Hope’ on interreligious dialogue. In the text, Di Segni highlights some “problematic aspects of the document”, in particular the fact that the name ‘Israel’ “never appears” in it. “Curiously,” Di Segni continues, “in contrast, it is stated that ‘Jesus is fully a man of his time and of his first-century Palestinian Jewish environment’. This is a quotation from a 1985 document, but today the notion of a Palestinian Jesus sounds strange.”
