Rome, 28 Sept. (LaPresse) – Ten years after the abduction, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni, the day of the verdict has arrived. The Court of Assizes in Rome will deliver its verdict today in the first-instance trial of four members of the Egyptian secret services, who are being tried in absentia for the murder of the Italian researcher, who was abducted in Cairo in February 2016. During his closing speech, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco sought a life sentence for Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif, believed to be the perpetrator of the murder, and 17 years and six months’ imprisonment for Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, Uhsam Helmi and Tareq Sabyr. The Prime Minister’s Office, which has joined the proceedings as a civil party through the State Legal Service, has also sought compensation of two million euros. The defence teams rejected all charges, arguing that the abduction was the work of terrorist groups seeking to undermine relations between Italy and Egypt. Regeni’s parents, Paola Deffendi and Claudio, assisted by lawyer Alessandra Ballerini, are expected to be present in court. The young man’s body was found along the road between Cairo and Alexandria, showing signs of torture.
