Rome, 2 Oct. (LaPresse) – The alleged cause of Abderrahim Fakir’s death is thought to be hypoxia caused by being held in a prone position. This was stated to LaPresse by lawyer Fabio Anselmo, who is representing the family of the 42-year-old man who died on 19 July whilst in police custody in the Pilastro district of Bologna. “Death due to hypoxia caused by being held face down, an increased need for oxygen due to cocaine use and a state of agitation. However, the cocaine is not a contributing factor. As in the Magrini judgement, cited during the proceedings, cocaine is not even a contributing factor; together with the agitation, it increased his oxygen demand, which he was deprived of because the officers kept him in a prone position.” According to the lawyer, the experts have also raised concerns regarding the actions of the medical staff, in particular for failing to call a doctor whilst Fakir was in a state of agitation. The investigations will need to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.
