Naples, 7 Oct. (LaPresse) – Four healthcare professionals – three doctors and a midwife – have been subject to precautionary measures as part of the investigation into the death of a newborn baby at the end of March 2024 at the San Leonardo Hospital in Castellammare di Stabia (Naples). The acting head of the Gynaecology Department has been placed under house arrest, whilst two doctors and a midwife have been suspended from practising for 12 months. Officers from the Torre Annunziata unit of the Guardia di Finanza executed an order issued by the investigating magistrate of the Oplontino Court against the four suspects, at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The alleged offences include negligent homicide in a healthcare setting, material and ideological falsification of a public document by a public official, fraud in criminal proceedings and obstruction of justice. The investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Torre Annunziata and carried out by officers from the Castellammare di Stabia unit, was launched following the death of the newborn, which occurred at the end of March 2024, just over a month after the birth. The baby had been admitted immediately to intensive care due to complications arising during the delivery, which took place at the San Leonardo hospital in Castellammare. The investigations are said to have revealed not only negligence on the part of the healthcare staff who had attended the delivery, but also a series of actions taken in the immediate aftermath – according to the investigators’ hypothesis – to conceal that negligence.
