Turin, 15 Oct. (LaPresse) – Shortly after 8 am this morning, a group of 40 young people, their faces concealed by carnival masks and balaclavas, forced their way into the ‘Sella’ Secondary School, at 12 Via Montecuccoli in Turin, and – by forcing open a door – managed to gain access to the sports hall of the ‘Ricardi di Netro’ Primary School, where they damaged the furnishings and sports equipment using metal bars. Half an hour later, similar acts of vandalism also took place at the ‘Bosso-Monti’ Upper Secondary School, where the same group smashed the building’s windows with fire extinguishers and metal bars. The Carabinieri, who intervened on both occasions, apprehended a young man with his face concealed by a balaclava whilst he was in the process of smashing a window frame with a fire extinguisher; upon seeing the officers, he reportedly fled, but was caught after a brief chase on foot. The 17-year-old, who was not a pupil at any of the schools involved, reportedly resisted arrest, shoving the officers violently before being finally subdued. During the arrest, several members of the group are said to have thrown numerous stones at the officers. One of the stones struck a police officer who, after being taken by ambulance to the A&E department at Maria Vittoria Hospital, was discharged with a prognosis of 10 days’ recovery for an intramuscular haematoma in his left leg. The minor was arrested for resisting arrest, charged with aggravated criminal damage and taken to the Turin Juvenile Detention Centre (C.P.A.), where he remains at the disposal of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
