Milan, 20 Oct. (LaPresse) – “The risk” that what happened last Saturday in the streets of Milan “could happen again in the near future is extremely high”: one need only “consider that the day after” 17 October “a similar situation arose” and that new and further calls have been made via social media, aimed at young people, to make the mobilisation “permanent”. This is stated by the Milan investigating magistrate, Fabrizio Felice, in the order in which he orders imprisonment for four adults and house arrest for a fifth protester detained last Saturday, 17 October. The ruling highlights that, within a short space of time, “new calls to action spread via social media” originating “from the ‘Italia in piazza’ and ‘Movimento 17 ottobre’ accounts” (which are also currently under investigation), inviting young people to make the mobilisation “permanent” and “to maintain a decidedly violent and insurrectionary stance”. The protest, “billed as peaceful and for social causes” to protest against the high cost of living, “immediately degenerated into full-blown urban warfare”, during which, “simultaneously by thousands of people (mostly young men, many of them minors), group and armed attacks (involving the throwing of stones and blunt objects) against police officers, acts of vandalism in the city centre, as well as the destruction and looting of numerous commercial premises”.
