Rome, 26 Oct. (LaPresse) – In his closing speech before the Assize Court, Public Prosecutor Antonio Verdi outlined the defendant’s culpability and the missed opportunities which, according to the prosecution, could have saved little Andromeda and her mother. Verdi also pointed the finger at the police officers who attended the scene: “If the officers had acted as they should have, they would have saved the little girl. They did not do their job properly; if they had done what needed to be done, perhaps the little girl would still be alive. They allowed themselves to be manipulated by Kaufmann,” stated the prosecutor, who coordinated the investigation with Deputy Prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini. Then came the tribute to the little girl, whom Kaufmann robbed of any chance of a life: “Andromeda could have loved and been loved, had a boyfriend, been happy, and experienced the joys of life. Instead, she will never know any of this. She was never even briefly aware that she existed in this world. Because her father took her life.” Verdi described the case as “a horror that the mind refused to accept for several moments”, calling Kaufmann “a manipulator and a narcissist, lucid and rational”. The verdict is due on 5 November.
