Rome, Oct. 29 (LaPresse) – The State Police carried out “an order imposing two precautionary measures, one involving detention in prison and the other house arrest, against two men aged 36 and 46, both from Rome, suspected of being jointly responsible for an attempted robbery aggravated by racial hatred, committed on the eve of last Ferragosto, against a researcher and expert in the history of Jewish communities in Europe”. The investigation, conducted by officers from the Digos unit of the Rome Police Headquarters and coordinated by prosecutors from the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Ordinary Court, “was launched following a complaint filed by the victim at the Porta Pia Police Station”. On the evening of August 14, the victim, a researcher and scholar of Jewish history whose academic and scientific work focuses on publishing and disseminating research on these subjects, was near the synagogue at 92 Via Padova when “he was approached by the two attackers who, after directing antisemitic insults at him, allegedly attempted to seize the mobile phone he was using to call 112, striking him in the face before managing to flee”, a statement said. The reconstruction of the incident, “captured by video surveillance systems located near the stretch of road where the episode took place, revealed a sequence of violent acts, first verbal and racially motivated, then physical, lasting approximately ten minutes”. Thanks in part to information provided by the Porta Pia Police Station and the Piazza Bologna Carabinieri Station, “the physical features captured by surveillance cameras, as well as certain tattoos, proved crucial to the investigation, enabling the identification of the two perpetrators to be corroborated by matching the images with evidence gathered from the complaint and witness statements”. “The meticulous reconstruction of the locations where the crime took place, as well as the surrounding areas”, enabled investigators to “piece together the body of evidence and identify the two individuals, whose presence in the area had been established in the period immediately preceding the incident”.
