EU, Calenda: ‘von der Leyen plan bury bipolarity, we agree with FI’

Rome, 4th March (LaPresse) – ‘Von der Leyen's proposal on rearmament? A sacrosanct proposal. For the first time since 1945 we are alone. We don't have the United States. What do we want to do with such an aggressive Russia? As we know from Roman times, to avoid war you have to be strong. If you are weak, you encourage aggression from others’. This is what the leader of Azione Carlo Calenda said outside Montecitorio on the proposal for an EU rearmament plan by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. ‘What I think I can say is that this proposal is definitively burying Italian bipolarism. How can there be a broad field with Schlein going out onto the streets for Europe and Bonelli, Fratoianni and Conte against it? And then there's Salvini, who has a different line from the centre-right, with Meloni, who it's not clear whose side she's on. This way we can't cope with the recession and the geopolitical situation’, adds the senator. ’Schlein's no to von der Leyen's proposal in favour of a common defence? I don't understand how anyone can say such a thing. We're talking about a total emergency situation. We can't start making distinctions of distinctions of distinctions. Frankly, today the only position comparable to ours, apart from +Europa, is that of Forza Italia. As for the rest, they all seem a bit crazy to me. Meloni has gone from supporting Ukraine without ifs and buts to ‘who knows, if I'd been there I would have slept there’. You can't do that. It's no way to keep a steady hand in foreign policy’.
