Rome, June 15 (LaPresse) – "Today, Crosetto announced that Italy will reach 5% military spending within ten years. This means going from the current 45 billion euros (35 for defense and almost 10 for security) to a staggering 145 billion euros in 2035 – more than triple today’s figure – with an increase of around 100 billion. This estimate coincides with what was recently stated by the Undersecretary of Defense, Matteo Perego di Cremnago: 66 billion more for defense and 33 billion more for security.
Rearmament is dragging Italy into a war economy, while global military spending has already reached the monstrous figure of 2.7 trillion dollars. Crosetto is telling Italians a nightmarish fairy tale, claiming that healthcare and welfare will not be weakened. But he does not say where the money will come from. Most importantly, what is truly serious is that by planning such a reckless increase in military spending, the government is giving up on working for disarmament and peace in the coming decades."
This was stated by Angelo Bonelli, MP of the Greens and Left Alliance and national co-spokesperson of Europa Verde, commenting on the Defense Minister's interview with Corriere della Sera.
