Florence, 27 September (LaPresse) – ‘The President of the Republic has made an appeal, and it would be wrong of me to suggest that the President of the Republic will not be listened to. I hope that when the President of the Republic makes an appeal, everyone will listen.’ These were the words of Giovanni Donzelli, national head of the Fratelli d’Italia organisation, in Florence on the sidelines of a party conference, regarding what the government intends to do if the Global Sumud Flotilla continues sailing towards Gaza, rejecting the appeal launched yesterday by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to accept the mediation of the CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference) to deliver aid to the Palestinian population, safeguarding the safety of the activists. “I believe it is important to listen to President Mattarella’s words,” added Donzelli. ‘Giorgia Meloni thanked not only President Mattarella, but also the opposition parties that showed sensitivity towards President Mattarella. So I believe that any words at this moment should reinforce President Mattarella’s appeal for this mediation, which was underway and which for the moment seems to have been rejected by some of the members of the flotilla. The appeal for further reflection, which also comes from the opposition parties, is an important appeal that we hope will be accepted.”
