Rome, 5 December (LaPresse) – “Every day, millions of people voluntarily make an invaluable contribution to the community. This dedication is accentuated during humanitarian, environmental and climate crises, and takes the form of small, generous daily acts of kindness. Volunteering is a spontaneous force at the service of people, a resource that supports the institutions responsible for relief and reconstruction, making their activities more effective. The United Nations reminds us that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires the contribution of volunteers to defeat poverty, hunger and inequality and to promote peace. These were the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the International Day of Volunteers for Economic and Social Development. “Today’s edition of Volunteer Day, with the theme ‘Every contribution counts”, takes on particular significance, opening the International Year established by the UN to emphasise the importance and necessity of integrating this valuable heritage of initiatives and values into policies aimed at implementing the 2030 Agenda. The Republic is grateful to volunteers and their organisations for the valuable solidarity work they do,” concluded the Head of State.
