Rome, 7 January (LaPresse) – “Today marks the 229th anniversary of the birth of the Tricolour, symbol of our homeland. The Tricolour flew with the winds of revolution in the Cispadane Republic in 1797. After passing through the epic period of the Risorgimento, it became the flag of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Chosen by the Constituent Assembly as the banner of the new state, it now embodies the high values set out in the Constitution: unity, freedom, democracy and social cohesion of the country.” Thus spoke the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. “As the emblem of the Republic, it is an element that distinguishes Italian identity in every place and in every sphere, from the peace missions of our Armed Forces to diplomatic missions abroad and sporting competitions,” added the Head of State. . ‘All Italians look upon our flag with love and respect: it reflects our common history and the foundations of our civilisation, and it is in it that we recognise our national community. Long live the Tricolour, long live the Republic.’
