Gaza, Meloni: ‘Interested in Board of Peace but signature incompatible with Charter, more time needed’

Milan, 21 Jan. (LaPresse) – On the Board of Peace for Gaza, ‘Italy’s position is one of openness’. This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the “Speciale Porta a porta – 30 anni della nostra vita” programme on Rai1. “We are open, available and interested for at least two reasons. The first I have explained many times: I think Italy can play a unique role in implementing the peace plan for the Middle East and in building the two-state solution. The second is that, in general, I would not consider it a wise choice on the part of Italy, or indeed on the part of Europe, to exclude itself from an organisation that is, in any case, interesting. There is a constitutional compatibility issue for us, because a reading of the statute has revealed that there are some elements that are incompatible with our Constitution, and this certainly does not allow us to sign tomorrow. However, we need more time, there is work to be done, but my position remains one of openness.”
