Rome, 23 Jan. (LaPresse) – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni chaired a meeting this afternoon at the Civil Protection headquarters in Rome on the damage caused by the exceptional wave of bad weather that hit southern Italy, in particular due to the passage of cyclone Harry. This was announced in a statement from Palazzo Chigi, explaining that the Prime Minister has announced that the Council of Ministers will be convened on Monday “to deliberate on the declaration of a state of emergency in the affected areas, anticipating an initial allocation to meet immediate needs and guarantee initial relief, pending a complete and comprehensive assessment of the damage”. The meeting was attended by Minister Nello Musumeci, connecting from Catania; the Undersecretary to the Prime Minister, Alfredo Mantovano; the President of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto; the President of the Sardinia Region, Alessandra Todde; the President of the Sicily Region, Renato Schifani; and the Head of the Civil Protection Department, Fabio Ciciliano. Meloni, the statement continues, renewed ‘her own solidarity and that of the entire government with the communities involved and her gratitude to the Department, local authorities, regions, municipalities and prefects for their work in forecasting and issuing alerts. It is also thanks to the institutional synergy that was promptly activated that there were no casualties, despite the considerable amount of rainfall and the violence of the storm surges on the coasts.’
