Rome, 26 January (LaPresse) – The Meloni government has declared a state of national emergency in the regions of Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria, which have been hit by severe weather in recent days. The proposal was put forward and presented by the Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policy, Nello Musumeci, at this afternoon’s meeting of the Council of Ministers, which was also attended by the presidents of the regions of Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria. The state of emergency may last for 12 months, extendable for another 12 months, as provided for in the Civil Protection Code. In order to carry out the initial interventions provided for in Article 25(a), (b) and (c) of the Civil Protection Code, a total sum of €100 million has been approved, to be drawn from the National Emergency Fund. In the coming days, the government will adopt a new interministerial measure to allow for the restoration and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure as soon as the regions have completed a detailed assessment of the damage. The reconstruction work will be coordinated by the respective regional presidents, who were appointed today as commissioners with broad powers of derogation.
