Milan, Jan 29 (LaPresse) – “There was an agreement between me and Meloni, so much so that we had voted unanimously in the Chamber. Then there were the regional elections, and Salvini, after Veneto, wanted to upset everything. At that point, Meloni also went back on the agreement. The text presented by Bongiorno is unacceptable.” This is what PD leader Elly Schlein said in an interview with Corriere della Sera. “The only real reason to pass that law was to incorporate into our legal system the concept of consent as provided by the Istanbul Convention ratified by Italy. Replacing consent with dissent means going backward and placing an even greater burden on the shoulders of women and victims of violence. That was exactly what this law was intended to prevent,” Schlein added. “I asked Meloni not to let the patriarchal majority dictate the line and to listen instead to the network of organizations that deal with violence, and to specialized lawyers and judges. If Parliament has to vote on a law that takes a step backward, that betrays women, then it is better not to pass it,” Schlein added.
