Rome, 5 February (LaPresse) – With the approval of the security package in the Council of Ministers, ‘we continue to add pieces to a precise plan: a state that does not look the other way, that defends those who defend us and that restores security and freedom to citizens’. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote this on social media, explaining that through the measures approved by the government, “we are strengthening the possibility of removing dangerous individuals from the most at-risk areas of cities. We are introducing tougher penalties for pickpockets, with theft by sleight of hand becoming a prosecutable offence and the elimination of the paradox of ending up under investigation for kidnapping if you stop a thief who has just robbed you while waiting for the police. We are also addressing the phenomenon of baby gangs, with a crackdown on knives and a ban on selling any offensive weapon to minors. We are also introducing specific tools to prevent the presence and action of organised groups dedicated to violence, which have nothing to do with the right to demonstrate and which use public squares as a pretext to create disorder and destruction’. “Finally, an extremely important rule: if you have legitimately defended yourself, you are not automatically entered in the register of suspects, while retaining all the protections provided by law,” concludes Meloni.
