Rome, 12 February (LaPresse) – “I don’t want a stronger public prosecutor, I want a public prosecutor who is calm, who is not under pressure to do one thing or another. Secondly, and very importantly, this reform is a reform for the powerful and the rich. Those under investigation, defendants, deviant Freemasons, and all the centres of power that would not have an easy life with an efficient justice system will vote yes. Decent people who believe that legality is an important pillar for change in Calabria will vote no.” Thus spoke Naples prosecutor Nicola Gratteri in an interview with Corriere di Calabria. The political reactions were immediate and harsh. The Yes to Reform Committee wrote in a social media post: ‘Dear Gratteri, we invite you to apologise to the millions of Italians who will vote yes, including all the members of this committee, among whom are many of your fellow magistrates. No one, including you, is the guardian of morality and public ethics. This presumption of moral superiority is frankly unbearable. We trust that, as usual, messages of this kind will further encourage Italians to vote to show that they do not need a licence from you to cast their vote. We are all old enough and informed enough,” they conclude.
