Fuels, Meloni: “We are considering activating the mobile excise duty mechanism”

Rome, Mar 11 (LaPresse) – “We are paying the utmost attention to the possible economic repercussions of this crisis. We have prepared all monitoring tools regarding price trends and to counter any speculative phenomena,” said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her address to the Senate ahead of the European Council on March 19-20 and regarding developments in the Middle East crisis.

“In particular, on fuels,” she added, “we are also considering activating the so-called mobile excise duty mechanism, which this government made more effective with the 2023 fuel measure. Its activation is among the countermeasures we are ready to take.”

“Regarding the current increase in fuel prices, the message I want to give to Italians, but also to anyone who might think of exploiting this situation to enrich themselves at the expense of citizens and businesses, is: exercise caution. Because we will do everything we can to prevent speculation on the crisis, including, if necessary, recovering the proceeds of speculation through higher taxation of the companies responsible,” she concluded.
