Referendum, Meloni: ‘It’s a reform for everyone; if the ‘Yes’ vote wins, we’ll sit down with the judiciary straight away’

Turin, 16 March (LaPresse) – “Governments come and go, as do political parties, but the Constitution remains and affects everyone’s lives. This reform is neither right-wing nor left-wing. It is a reform based on simple, pure common sense, and it is by no means a coincidence that many of the points it contains – from the separation of career paths to the random selection process for the CSM – were proposed in the past by those who today contest them so vehemently, with the sole aim of politically attacking the government. But the truth is that this reform is a just reform that affects everyone’s lives, our freedom and our rights.” So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in an interview with the newspaper ‘Il Dubbio’ ahead of the referendum on justice. “We do not want to punish anyone, and I will not accept anyone claiming otherwise. It is a politically motivated accusation from those who lack substantive arguments to challenge the reform. I entered politics following the example of Paolo Borsellino, and I have always held the utmost respect for the work that magistrates do every day to combat crime and guarantee citizens’ freedom and security,” she added – ‘And the fact that this reform is strongly supported by a great many serving magistrates, including public prosecutors and presidents of the Court of Cassation, confirms in the clearest possible way that it is not directed against magistrates or against anyone, but is instead for all magistrates and, with them, for all citizens.’ In the event of a ‘yes’ victory, “in the days immediately following, I will convene a round-table discussion at Palazzo Chigi with representatives of the judiciary and the legal profession in order to gather proposals and suggestions for drafting the implementing regulations, which will be just as important as the reform itself,” concluded Meloni.
