Rome, April 4 (LaPresse) – “Being uncritically subservient to Trump is causing us nothing but harm: he must stop and this illegal war must end, and the government must say so clearly.” This is what PD Secretary Elly Schlein said, recalling the words of the US president: “We cannot take care of nurseries and healthcare, people need to understand. We are a great power, we wage wars.”
“Trump’s words are light-years away from our constitutional values, delirious words from which the best of Italy dissociates in the clearest way. But why can’t Giorgia Meloni ask Trump and Netanyahu to stop? Why can’t she say a clear word even though families and businesses are enduring continuous fuel and energy price increases? Today Meloni is asking Europe to do what she hasn’t had the courage to do in Italy so far: tax the windfall profits of energy companies,” the Democratic secretary reiterated, emphasizing that “a structural response is needed: immediately introduce a European gas price cap as was done in 2022, and in Italy the share of renewables must be increased to decouple electricity prices from gas. For this, it is necessary to simplify authorization procedures and multiply the commissions in charge, to speed things up.”
“In Spain,” Schlein continued, “these strategies have allowed energy to be paid at 18 euros per megawatt-hour, while in Italy in recent days it has approached 160 euros per megawatt-hour. There, gas sets the price of energy only 15% of the time, while here almost 80% of the time. This cannot go on, families are overburdened by bills, and companies lose competitiveness. Furthermore, today it was reported that fuel for flights is beginning to run short and is being rationed. Meanwhile, the war continues and prices risk rising further, eroding even the effects of government decrees, whose responses will only be a temporary patch if the conflict is not brought to an end,” she concluded.
