Iran: Meloni with EU and Canadian leaders: ‘We must now negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war’

Rome, 8 April (LaPresse) – “We welcome the two-week ceasefire agreed today between the United States and Iran. We thank Pakistan and all the partners involved for facilitating this important agreement. The aim must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war in the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means. We strongly encourage rapid progress towards a substantive negotiated solution. This will be crucial to protecting Iran’s civilian population and ensuring security in the region. It can avert a serious global energy crisis.” This was stated in a joint declaration, “open to other partners”, by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni together with French President Macron, German Chancellor Merz, British Prime Minister Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Carney, Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen, Dutch Prime Minister Jetten, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, and EU leaders von der Leyen and Costa. “We support these diplomatic efforts,” they emphasise. “To this end, we are in close contact with the United States and other partners. We call on all parties to implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon. Our governments will help to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
