Milan, 1 June (LaPresse) – ‘The Republic was born out of a united and sincere exercise in democracy. The Italian people played a leading role in this, turning out at the polling stations with extraordinary enthusiasm and composure to decide on the structure of the State and to elect the Constituent Assembly’. This was written by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of Republic Day, in a message sent to Italy’s prefects asking them to convey this message in the initiatives organised at local level to mark 2 June. ‘Women, in particular, played a leading role,’ Mattarella notes, “being called to the polls for the first time in Italian history, both for the local elections held that year and for the vote on 2 June. On that occasion, at a delicate moment of transition, the free exercise of the vote was once again guaranteed, restoring – after years, and with the active contribution of the prefectures and other institutions – the functioning of the complex electoral machinery.”
