If even Libya has acknowledged the responsibility of the Libyan torturer, why did Italy choose to bring him back home on a state flight instead of handing him over to justice? Almasri was and still is accused by the International Criminal Court of crimes against humanity and war crimes. Yet the Meloni government, which had the duty to hand him over to the ICC, repatriated him to Libya using taxpayers’ money. Not only that: for months it provided vague reconstructions and contradictory versions of the affair, and Meloni attacked the judges. All this while our country was referred to the International Criminal Court, suffering a very serious blow to its credibility. A case that demonstrates the extreme incompetence, irresponsibility and opacity of the Meloni government.” This was stated by Alessandro Zan, member of the national secretariat of the Democratic Party and Member of the European Parliament.
