Rome, 18 July (LaPresse) – “There is no quagmire into which Forza Italia is in danger of falling, nor does any of us harbour any hidden agendas. Forza Italia neither participates in nor is subject to alternative strategies, nor does it allow itself to be drawn into any manoeuvres devised by others. We are attentive, we are aware, we are vigilant. And above all, if I may say so, we do not need to choose the centre-right, because Forza Italia is the centre-right. It was the driving force behind its formation and continues to be a decisive component – including in electoral terms – without which the very nature of the coalition would change.” So said Stefania Craxi, chair of Forza Italia’s senators, in a letter to Daniele Capezzone, editor-in-chief of *Il Tempo*. “We are a community that embodies a reformist, liberal and populist outlook; we are the home of those who uphold due process, of rational pro-Europeans and of friends of the West. And we defend this identity of ours every day in our parliamentary work and in government action,” she adds. “It should therefore come as no surprise if differing positions emerge on certain issues. I am thinking, for example, of certain proposals on justice that risk sacrificing reason even before the law. For this reason, when we say a firm ‘no’, we are not committing an act of rebellion. We are simply doing what a serious political force is called upon to do: representing our own ideas,’ he emphasises. ‘Cooperation and debate are therefore not a weakness. They are the reason for this alliance’s success.’ What happened in the Chamber of Deputies, Craxi adds, ‘certainly calls for reflection, but not for rushing headlong into action’.
