Rome, 19 July (LaPresse) – “I am addressing President Mattarella as a wife and a mother, with the utmost respect for his role as Head of State. I am simply asking him to look beyond the court documents, to consider Mario’s age, the trauma he has suffered and the fact that he poses no danger to society. I ask him for an act of clemency and humanity to allow an elderly man to spend the final years of his life with his family.” Thus Mariangela Sandrone, wife of Mario Roggero, addresses the Head of State in an interview with La Stampa. “I feel as though I am caught in a nightmare that has become reality. The house is incredibly quiet. Knowing that Mario, aged 72 and after a lifetime of work, is now in prison is an indescribable pain. It is a piece of my life that has been torn away from me,” says the wife of the jeweller sentenced to 14 years and 9 months for killing, on the evening of 28 April 2021, two of the three robbers who had just raided his jewellery shop. “Away from that shop and from the headlines in the newspapers and on TV, Mario is a man deeply devoted to his family, a tireless worker, a caring husband and grandfather,” she adds. “He is someone who has always put the protection of his loved ones above all else. He is not the ‘avenger’ that some describe, but a man who has been deeply scarred and traumatised by that cursed day. We would like people to truly understand what happened, and how Mario felt after his family had once again been threatened and put in danger.”
