Rome, 19 July (LaPresse) – “The Via d’Amelio massacre, coming two months after the one in Capaci, left a deep mark on the nation’s conscience. It represented the culmination of a subversive plot aimed at subjugating the democratic institutions and the very freedom of the Italian people. Paolo Borsellino paid for his commitment as a magistrate with his life, and alongside him were killed five public servants, whose names are forever inscribed in the memory of the Republic: Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina and Claudio Traina. Thirty-four years on from the massacre, our feelings of solidarity and closeness to the families of all those – men and women from the police force, the judiciary and the institutions – who defended our community from the cancer of the Mafia remain undiminished.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the anniversary of the Via D’Amelio massacre. “That subversive plot,” the President emphasised, “was defeated thanks to their contribution. The Republic has proved itself to be stronger by capturing and convicting the perpetrators and those who ordered the killings.”
