Milan, 20 July (LaPresse) – “It was a meeting at home, without even my regional coordinator – who was, however, kept informed – but precisely to avoid any misunderstanding: it was not with the other regional or local political groups, but with those who have expressed a willingness to stand for election.” So said the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, at the end of a lunch with a number of independent and political candidates standing in the Milan local elections. The aim, the President continued, “was to make it clear that whatever the choice may be – which I believe depends neither on me nor on any one of them – there is a team. Today I am proud to say that this meeting may help to demonstrate that whoever is chosen, there is a team determined to win, and Lupi is part of it too. Together they have realised that they can win; if they were to face each other, the battle would be impossible to win. Today’s aim was to say: right, we’re all united; whoever among us becomes mayor, the others will support them. We didn’t discuss who leads the team; it wasn’t up to me or this meeting to decide who might become mayor. The aim I had set myself was to meet with them as members of Fratelli d’Italia, and to ensure that we don’t split our forces, but that whoever is chosen has a team behind them”. When asked whether the name of the centre-right’s future mayoral candidate might be announced by September, the President of the Senate replied: “I hope so soon.”
