Rome, 24 July (LaPresse) – “The government must halt the sale of the final block of shares in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena.” So said the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, in a statement in which he commented on speculation regarding an imminent accelerated sale by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) of the remaining 4.863 per cent public stake. “This is a position unanimously shared with local institutions,” explains the statement, emphasising that “the Tuscany Region and local authorities are in fact launching a joint appeal to the national government to halt the final privatisation, setting as essential conditions the retention of management and senior leadership functions in Siena – the city where the bank was founded – and a full employment guarantee for all the group’s employees”. “We are talking about the world’s oldest bank, which represents a fundamental strategic pillar for the Italian economy and the identity of our region,” continues Giani, emphasising the need to preserve the unbreakable bond between the bank and its home region: “We will defend Monte dei Paschi against any attempt that might undermine its strength and autonomy. The State must not sell this remaining stake without safeguarding the future of the workers and ensuring that the head office remains firmly rooted in Siena.”
