Rome, 1 August (LaPresse) – The suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain “is a farce, because this government is arguing with maps. That is an enclave in North Africa where the Schengen rules on free movement do not apply anyway, so no one can freely leave Ceuta to go to Spain and then on to other European countries. It’s all propaganda.” So said the secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), Elly Schlein, on the sidelines of a PD event in Urbino on inland areas and mountain communities. “I’d add: just imagine if other European countries had done the same to us when, in the first year of the Meloni government, 157,000 irregular migrants arrived in Italy. This is not just a dangerous precedent for Europe; it is a dangerous precedent first and foremost for our own country. And it is absurd that this attack on Spain and Sánchez should come from another border country which, in recent years, together with other border countries, has had to deal with more than seventy or eighty per cent of the asylum applications received across the entire European Union on its own. “We should join forces to call for solidarity from other countries, because you can’t just want the benefits of being part of the Union and then never share in its responsibilities, can you? Because they take all the European funds, so they must also share the responsibilities,” continues the Democratic Party leader.
