The League was the first political force in Europe to call for the suspension of Schengen and the closure of borders with Spain, and we are satisfied that the Italian government and other countries have followed this line. But this is not a battle that started today: we have been saying it for more than ten years. And I say this after facing six years of legal proceedings for defending Italy’s borders from a Spanish ship, with the Municipality of Barcelona joining the case as a civil party against me. Defending borders is not extremism, it is common sense.” Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini said this in an interview with Il Giornale. Asked whether the situation in Ceuta showed what would happen if the left governed in Italy, he replied: “Exactly. More than 50,000 arrivals in less than 24 hours is an impressive figure, numbers that can destabilize any country, if not the entire continent. For years they told us that Sanchez was the model to follow, only to then witness the chaos produced by his policies. And there is great hypocrisy: when migrants arrive in Italy, they are considered a resource and welcoming them is a duty; when they overwhelm Spain, they become a hybrid war and an emergency. They should make up their minds. The reality is that the ‘Sanchez model’ has failed. And for the League, illegal immigration must always be stopped,” the deputy prime minister concluded.
