Rome, 7 August (LaPresse) – The opposition group leaders in the Chamber of Deputies have written to Speaker Lorenzo Fontana asking him to “consider applying Article 60 of the Rules of Procedure” against the FdI group leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Galeazzo Bignami. This was announced in a statement noting that “during the sitting on 5 August, Bignami repeatedly implicated the former President of the Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, attributing to him the alleged ‘release of 300 mafia members under the 41-bis regime’. This is a historically unfounded account that undermines the prestige of the highest office of the State”. In the letter, the group leaders Chiara Braga (PD), Riccardo Ricciardi (M5S), Luana Zanella (AVS), Matteo Richetti (AZ) and Riccardo Magi (+EU) point out that “these statements were repeated despite warnings from the Chair” and therefore call for “formal action to reaffirm respect for the institutions and the principle that political debate cannot be based on attributing facts that do not correspond to reality”. On this basis, they also call for “sanctions to be considered against Bignami, as the Chamber’s Rules of Procedure state that it is not permitted to use ‘insulting language towards the institutions or the Head of State’”.
