Namely, that Europe’s priority must be to protect its external borders from uncontrolled immigration, to rule out any security and terrorism risks, and to defend the freedom of movement that underpins the Schengen system. The serious migration crisis that has unfolded in Ceuta and the possible new wave – predicted by the Spanish authorities themselves for 15 August – require our utmost vigilance and the need to continue taking all necessary measures.” This was stated by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in an interview with ‘Milano Finanza’. “In recent years,” the Prime Minister emphasised, “we have demonstrated, on the migration front as on other issues, that Europe’s approach can change. And the Italian government will continue to work to ensure that the results achieved so far can be consolidated and that we can do more and do it better. For example, by pursuing the path opened up by the Return Regulation on hubs in third countries, as well as other innovative solutions outside Europe.”
