(LaPresse) – “I will propose making the study of Italian compulsory for parents whose children are underperforming at school or have problems with the school community, because what is learnt at school must not be lost at home; it is essential that parents know our language and interact with teachers: there are far too many foreign parents who do not show up at school.” This was stated by the Minister for Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, during his speech at the Rimini Meeting. “ “When I hear that the school drop-out rate for foreign pupils is 26 per cent and for Italian pupils 6 per cent, I am concerned,” explained the minister, emphasising that “it is clear that we must care about these children, but not merely in words, and not through demagoguery or ideology, but through the practicality of love and intelligence. We must start with a proper knowledge of the Italian language, because learning Italian is fundamental and crucial for any educational pathway or future integration.”
