Bonino’s death: Prodi says, “She embodied clarity and always remained true to her principles”

Rome, 11 Sept. (LaPresse) – “I received the news with great sadness; we worked together so much. It is a real loss.” So said Romano Prodi to SkyTg24 as he remembered Emma Bonino, who died today at the age of 78. “Ours was an exceptional relationship; aside from the intelligence and the enjoyment we took in our conversations, there was absolute loyalty in our government work and in our debates. Even though we disagreed on many things, we always worked together on the fundamental principles. Usually in politics there was a lack of clarity; Bonino embodied clarity and was the point of agreement – or, in some cases, of disagreement,” emphasised the former prime minister. “There was mutual respect, with major points of agreement and others of disagreement, but that is the nature of politics. “I had a good relationship with her – at times easy, at times difficult,” added Prodi, recalling the Radical Party leader’s final months. “My personal memory is of the phone calls during her illness. She had such vitality; that is the last memory I have of her. And also a certain sadness she felt about the state of politics. She wasn’t happy,” he concluded.
