My proposal stems from a deep concern: a highly dangerous scenario could arise once again, with the right winning yet again. And this would not only be a problem for Italy, but for the whole of Europe. We are seeing the rise of the far right in France and Germany. Another victory for the Italian right would contribute to the disintegration of Europe, which is exactly what both Trump and Putin want.” So said Angelo Bonelli, AVS, in an interview with the Corriere della Sera. “I thought we could achieve a high level of consensus to overcome the conflict over leadership,” he continued. “But the appeal, it seems, has fallen on deaf ears. I note that the PD intends to go ahead with the primaries. At this stage, it is pointless to continue talking about a unifying figure. I had put forward the proposal and I am putting it forward again today via the Corriere, but I see no positive signs.” As for the next steps, he has no doubts: “Let’s press ahead with the programmes. We cannot afford another five years of a right-wing government that dismantles the Constitution and calls civil, social and environmental rights into question.”
