Milan, Sept. 27 (LaPresse) – If the PD votes against the antisemitism bill in the final vote in the Chamber of Deputies on October 8, will you really leave the party to which you have belonged all your life? “That is my intention. I have thought it through and suffered over it: it is not an impulsive act. It is an intellectual, political and emotional conclusion. I would do it with a heavy heart.” This was stated by Emanuele Fiano, former PD member of parliament and president of Sinistra per Israele, in an interview with ‘Corriere della Sera’. Have you spoken with Elly Schlein after the announcement of the vote against the bill? “No. We have not contacted each other,” he replies. He then adds: “I don’t see what changes could have occurred. There were already reasons to strongly oppose the actions of the Israeli right in government: there had already been three wars in Gaza, settlements in the West Bank were multiplying, and institutions around the world were criticizing Israel.” How did you learn of the PD’s decision to vote against the bill? “I was visiting Birkenau. I am a member of the executive board of the International Auschwitz Committee. I was, I swear, standing in front of the ruins of crematorium IV, where the Sonderkommando revolt took place, carried out by 600 courageous Jews. My phone rang: the PD had just concluded its group meeting in the Chamber of Deputies, deciding to vote against the bill. I was devastated,” Fiano stressed.
