That difficult period also provided the impetus for the Conference on the Future of the Union, a process of public participation to which he made a fundamental contribution, yet one whose conclusions were, regrettably, lacking in foresight at a time when the strengthening of European institutions is urgently needed.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his message read by Italy’s Permanent Representative to the EU, Vincenzo Celeste, on the occasion of the naming of a European Parliament building in Brussels after David Sassoli.
