Eighty-two years have passed since the massacre carried out by the Nazi SS, backed by the Fascists, against the defenceless population, showing no mercy even towards children, women, the elderly or priests.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. “The strength of the survivors and the passing of generations have managed to reopen the paths of life, but the memory of that terrifying abyss remains a warning and continues to call us to account,” added the Head of State. “The dynamics of war alone are not enough to define its horror. We must delve into the roots of the desire for domination, of racist myths, and of the strategy to annihilate entire populations. It was this combination that unleashed bestial ferocity when the tide of the conflict began to turn against the occupiers and their accomplices.”
