Rome, 4 Oct. (LaPresse) – He returns home, to a Leopolda venue transformed for the occasion into Ithaca, and tries to ‘knock on someone else’s door’. Whilst many leaders in the centre of the centre-left are ‘jostling’ for a seat at the coalition table, Matteo Renzi is trying to ‘break through’ on the right: “This is an appeal to the reformists in Forza Italia: leave FI and join us,” he says. “I’m saying this to those who believed in Silvio Berlusconi’s pro-European vision – you cannot stand with those who reject Europe. ‘The doors are open, and I’m sure there will be some sign in the coming hours,’ he ventures. The response from the blue camp is not long in coming. The first to reply is the governor of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto. “I’d be tempted to turn the question around: what on earth would reformists and liberals be doing in a coalition led by Schlein and Conte? Because when I look at the reality of the so-called ‘broad coalition’, I see a radical left that questions support for Ukraine, that talks of new taxes and wealth taxes,” he cuts to the chase. Antonio Tajani’s rejection follows hot on its heels: “There is only one centre: Forza Italia. We are the home of the moderates, the European People’s Party in Italy, an alternative to the left and a pillar of the centre-right founded by Silvio Berlusconi,” the Deputy Prime Minister states clearly.
