Rome, Oct. 8 (LaPresse) — “Thanks to the center-right majority, thanks to Giorgia Meloni, and to the center-right government, Italy is entering the Third Republic. After 35 years, Italians will once again be able to choose individual members of Parliament through preference voting, but above all they will finally be able to choose who will govern the country as well, because they will be able to vote knowing who the coalitions will then put forward to the President of the Republic as their choice for prime minister.” This was said by Giovanni Donzelli, head of organization for Brothers of Italy, as he left the Chamber of Deputies, commenting on the majority’s successful vote on the electoral law. “Moreover, allowing out-of-town students to vote is also an important innovation,” Donzelli continued, stressing that it concerns “not only students, but also workers.” It is an innovation “that everyone has always called for, but only we have actually implemented.” Responding to criticism over the lack of gender alternation among preference candidates, the Brothers of Italy MP addressed “all those who have complained”: “We will see in the end how many women they put at the top of their lists.” “Brothers of Italy has always given space to women,” Donzelli said, pointing out that the leader of his own party, Giorgia Meloni, is herself a woman. Regarding the debate in Parliament, Donzelli said that, in their view, “attention to women is measured by how many women are included on the electoral lists. In reality, the Meloni government has shown attention to women because female employment has reached its highest level ever.” “Some women on the left think that defending women means only defending their seats in Parliament and their political positions,” Donzelli accused. He argued instead that “defending women means finally reaching 10 million employed women, the highest level ever recorded in Italy.” “And this is thanks to Giorgia Meloni.” Finally, regarding the possibility of a negative ruling by the Constitutional Court, Donzelli was unequivocal: “We are absolutely never afraid of anything.” If “the Constitutional Court issues a ruling, we will look at what the Court says and we will always respect it, no matter what,” while stressing that “we are certain that the law we have just approved is an important law that helps Italians and is fully constitutional.”
