We must do this, bearing one thing in mind: we can discuss this for as long as you like, but we must act soon because time is of the essence; we can even stay locked in there for a whole night – the important thing is that we emerge from there united. We have a responsibility to defeat these right-wing parties, and the necessary – though not yet sufficient – prerequisite is the unity of these forces, which must not ally themselves against their opponents but for the things they wish to achieve together.” This was stated by the PD’s secretary, Elly Schlein, during a debate with Giuseppe Conte, Angelo Bonelli, Nicola Fratoianni and Riccardo Magi, entitled ‘There is an alternative’, at the Manifestival organised by the daily newspaper ‘il manifesto’ in Rome. “Let us make concrete commitments, but let us commit to never again doing the right-wing a favour by splitting, as we did in 2022, because now is the time to take responsibility for this alternative,” she added.
