Milan, Oct. 19 (LaPresse) – “Our thoughts are unequivocally with the law enforcement officers, the men and women in uniform, whose anger and frustration I understand. This is also because, out of more than 200 people detained, current reports indicate that around ten arrests have been validated. As for the justice system and the judiciary, obviously, we cannot intervene. When you detain hundreds of people and perhaps only ten end up in prison, there is a problem that goes beyond politics.” This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini during a press conference presenting the so-called ‘anti-maranza’ legislation at the League’s headquarters on Via Bellerio in Milan. “Has the Interior Minister failed to act? Just as I do not take the place of the prefect, the police chief or the mayor, I will not take the place of the Interior Minister before the next elections,” he added. “I appeal to the mayors of Italy’s major cities that have not yet equipped their local police forces with Tasers for day-to-day urban security operations. Milan has 3,200 local police officers. If a few hundred of them were equipped with electroshock weapons, both they and the people of Milan would face fewer problems. Instead, for ideological reasons, almost all cities governed by the centre-left are disarming their local police officers,” Salvini concluded.
