Rome, 20 Oct. (LaPresse) – “We echo the cry for help and the appeal that the presidents of six regions have made to the government, once again calling for adequate funding for Italy’s public healthcare system. It is incredible that we have to resort to appeals and pleas just to guarantee citizens their right to health, as enshrined in the Constitution.” So stated Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, in a statement. “We are calling for healthcare spending to be brought up to the European average of 7 per cent of GDP, because we cannot continue to expect the National Health Service to cope with resources that fall short of the needs of people and local areas, nor can we pass the shortfall on to the regions, which cannot manage on their own. The resources for 2027 set out in the Budget Policy Document will amount to 2.4 billion, less than half of what even Minister Schillaci has requested,” she added. “The regional presidents Michele de Pascale, Stefania Proietti, Alessandra Todde, Eugenio Giani, Roberto Fico and Antonio Decaro were therefore right to demand that healthcare be made a genuine priority in the next Budget Bill. “The government must listen to the regions, stop making empty promises and ensure that this becomes a genuine priority.”
