Milan, 23 Oct. (LaPresse) – The Daily Telegraph, citing diplomatic sources, lists five names reportedly being considered as possible EU negotiators to engage with Vladimir Putin as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine, and reports that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is also on the ‘shortlist’. The other names mentioned by the newspaper are the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb; the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel; the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen; and the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre. Yesterday, Politico reported that there is a growing realisation amongst European governments that it may soon be necessary to appoint a chief negotiator capable of holding direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a peace agreement for Ukraine, explaining that the matter took on a sense of urgency this week after US envoy Steve Witkoff travelled to Russia to propose to Putin a three-way summit with Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. “In recent weeks, a growing sense of urgency has spread across Europe to find representatives to take part in the peace talks, due to fears that Donald Trump no longer represents the continent’s interests,” writes the Daily Telegraph.
