Rome, 6 Nov. (LaPresse) – “Your Holiness, I wish to thank you most sincerely for the message you have sent me as you prepare to set off for Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. It is a great joy for Italians and for me personally to know that you will be undertaking this long and much-anticipated pilgrimage to Latin America.” This is the text of the message sent by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to Pope Leo XIV. “I am certain that this Apostolic Journey, through the messages it will convey and the determination and perseverance with which Your Holiness will champion it, will inspire great hope and serve as a source of inspiration not only for the friendly peoples of that continent, but for the whole world,” adds the Head of State. Believers of different nationalities and cultures, of every generation and from diverse economic and social backgrounds, are all eagerly awaiting your arrival. They are united by their enthusiasm and the urgent need to find comfort in the face of challenges that are perceived as particularly grave, especially in contexts marked by stark inequalities, further exacerbated by the repercussions of international conflicts and global phenomena such as environmental change. The whole of Italy will follow this journey with keen interest, not least because of the historic human, cultural and economic ties that bind it to Latin America, a region which, over the past centuries, has generously welcomed hundreds of thousands of my fellow citizens who migrated to those lands in search of work and better living conditions. With these sentiments, I am pleased to renew to you, Your Holiness, on the eve of these important engagements of yours, the most sincere expressions of affection on behalf of the entire Italian people.”
