Milan, Sept. 2 (LaPresse) – “San Siro? I’m very concerned. As an adopted Milanese, I would be disappointed if Milan were to lose the opportunity to host the Euros due to the lack of San Siro’s renovation or the absence of a new stadium. As of now, unless something changes, the Euros cannot be hosted in Milan. This alarm is also shared by the clubs, but we are confident that by September 30 a decision will be made and we can move forward toward a new stadium, because clubs need proper facilities for fans and for the country as well.”
These were the words of Ezio Simonelli, president of Serie A, at the end of a meeting with club presidents, responding to reporters asking about his concerns regarding the situation of San Siro — in light of Milan’s public prosecutor’s urban planning investigations and the city’s upcoming sale of the stadium to the clubs.
“Holding a European Championship in Italy without including San Siro — the ‘Scala of football’ — would be a defeat for the country. I hope we see intentions aligned. We all agree in principle, but we hope this alignment of ideas turns into concrete action, because good intentions are not enough — we must act,” he added.
